Chapter 02 takes us to Bowood.
Played in May 2026, Bowood became the second stop on our journey through some of the south of England's most memorable golf courses. If Castle Royle introduced the series with immaculate conditioning and modern presentation, Bowood reminded us that some courses leave their mark through the landscape they occupy. Set within the historic Bowood Estate in Wiltshire, it feels as though the golf course has always belonged there.
The approach alone gives you a sense that this is somewhere special. Winding through the estate before reaching the clubhouse, there's an immediate feeling of space and tranquillity that stays with you throughout the day. Nothing feels rushed. Everything encourages you to slow down, take in your surroundings and enjoy the experience as much as the golf itself.
Out on the course, presentation was excellent. Fairways framed by mature woodland, greens running true and every hole maintained to a consistently high standard. The routing makes full use of the natural landscape, climbing and falling across the estate while changing direction enough to keep every tee shot feeling fresh. It's a course that rewards good course management just as much as clean ball striking.
What makes Bowood memorable is its variety.
One hole opens across wide stretches of rolling parkland, the next narrows between towering trees before leading to elevated greens or approaches guarded by water. The changes in elevation create some outstanding views across the Wiltshire countryside, while also adding another layer of strategy throughout the round. It never feels repetitive, and that's one of the course's greatest strengths.
There isn't a single hole that defines Bowood.
Instead, the experience builds naturally from one hole to the next. Every part of the course contributes something different, whether it's a challenging tee shot, a panoramic view or a well-protected green that demands your full attention. By the closing holes, you realise the lasting impression comes from the complete journey rather than one standout moment.
Away from the golf course, Bowood continues to impress. The practice facilities provide everything needed before the round, while the clubhouse offers the perfect place to unwind afterwards and reflect on the day. Combined with the surroundings of the estate, it creates an experience that extends far beyond eighteen holes.
